The challenge with quitting and staying that way is not the nicotine addiction, as there is not enough nicotine left in your body after 72 hours to produce real physical cravings.  Nor is it the other four thousand chemicals found in cigarettes, as they too are gone within the first four or five days. 

The real reason why people find it so difficult to quit smoking is because by now it has become an unconscious habit.  A habit, that provides you with a benefit in some way.  So naturally, if something was providing a valuable purpose for you, then you'd fight to keep it, wouldn't you!  And that's what unconsciously is going on.

Every single smoker started smoking for a very, very good reason.  No sane person starts smoking just to inhale a noxious poisonous gas, we all start because it gave us something.  It may have been a connection with friends, relaxation, to be cool or tough, to get attention for doing something wrong, etc.
